The Unofficial Google Shell

I have stumbled upon this a few weeks ago and have been enjoying using it very much. Mainly because I like typing commands and having my hands on the keyboard all the time.

Google Shell is an unofficial google command shell which allows us to search the web, images, blogs, news, video, etc just like the normal www.google.com search page. The only difference is the interface is much more simpler and easier to use (if you like typing commands).

The developer of this wonderful tool is Stefan Grothkopp and he coded this on top of the Google Search Ajax API

For starters, type "h" or "help" to get a list of commands.

To search, just type the keywords and enter. A list of top 5 results will appear. To go to one of the top 5 results links, type "read [no.]" and a new window/tab will appear or type "go [no.]" and the current tab/window will be redirected to that result page link.

For more results, type "more" and more results will appear.

Give this a try for all you command prompt geeks! :D

Launchy

If you are not a mouse person, then this app is for you. Behold, Launchy!

"Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager. Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!" - www.launchy.net

If you are a Mac user, you might find launchy similar to Quicksilver.

Launchy iscustomizable. It has skins which you can change. You can also tell it which directories you want it to indexed so that it can retrieve the files for you and how you want the results to be displayed.

I am a Launchy user for a year and it is something I can't live without. Especially when I am doing work on the laptop.

Under Bridge Spicy Crab, Jaffe/Lockhart Road Hong Kong

This famous spicy fried crab has a lot of shop lots on these 2 streets, 4 or 5 I think - to accommodate its many customers and celebrity photos. It seemed like every celebrities in Hong Kong (and Anthony Bourdain) had been here.
Laden with garlic and spring onions, you can request for mild, medium or extra spicy for your dish. I had the medium spicy and it was just right for me - love it! Must try if you are in Hong Kong - can't get it anywhere else :-)

Old Tiong Bahru Bak Kut Teh, Singapore

This bak kut teh soup was the peppery type, as opposed to herbal type (like klang bak kut teh). The soup was a bit salty at times, but paired with chinese tea (self brewed and served), I think it was perfect. The meat was tender, though the only complain I have was that the pieces were a bit big. I had the usual side dishes with bak kut teh - salted vegetables, bean curd skin and yu tiao. It's really nothing fancy here, but in all, satisfying.

Kyusyu Jangara Ramen, Harajuku, Tokyo

I had the signature kyusyu jangara 'all in' (zenbu iri) that has all fixings in there - can't really see from the photo as they were soaked in its super delicious soup! Can't get that soup anywhere else! It's not like those clear, bland miso soup you get here in Singapore, but it is full of taste and frothy. They boast that even Koizumi (Japan's ex-prime minister) likes the soup. The ingredients were tasty as well, let me try to remember - cha siu, tasty stewed pork meat, eggs, bamboo shoot (i think) and it's special ingredient, fish roe. To me, the special fish roe made the soup spicy. (note: when I use the word 'special' it normally means I-do-not-know-how-to-describe or i-do-not-know-what-it-actually-is or it is special).

Anyway, this was the first dish (in this case, bowl) that I ever had in Japan. Still flabbergasted with the place and lost in translation and what to do in a Japanese eatery - we blindly walked in and followed the flow of the queue. Like any fast food place, we need to place an order and make payment once we walk in. The cashier asked us where we were from and gave us an English menu. We ordered, got tokens from cashier, taken tokens from a waiter and then waited to be signaled to available seats at the counter. Once seated we were given two glasses of water and waited. There were condiments and a jug of water at the counter. The noodle came - in a flash we ate, we slurped, we drank.

We liked this ramen so much that we went there once more before our trip back ;-)

Lee Tong Kei Ipoh Hor Fun -Tanjong Pagar, Singapore

This shop is at 278 South Bridge Road, and it has been here for ages. My grandma used to come here. I'm here more for nostalgia-sake than the food, but the food is quite nice actually. Simple, no-frills and economical. The first photo is Lee Tong Kee K.L. Style (dry) while the next is the signature Lee Tong Kee Special (dry), the original Ipoh Hor Fun in the shop.

The KL Style was in a bowl - hor fun, chicken and bean sprouts with oyster souce (that's what it tasted like to me). The gravy is thicker than the Lee Tong Kee Special's sauce which tasted totally different. I prefer the LTK Special, which has prawns, shredded chicken and mushroom - more authentic and more like the Ipoh hor fun I know.

There are other food here as well, normal zhe char food. The 30 minutes while I was there, there was a constant stream of customers - old-timers, mainly - and yup, food and service was really quick!

one piece capsule - Sanji <3

I find this really, really cute! Sorry that the photos are not clear.. Anyway, this is my favourite One Piece character - Sanji-kun!! I got this mini capsule machine from a, erm, capsule machine ;-) you can see that this is a mini size of it.. compare it with my phone below.

The best thing of all.. this mini capsule machine really works! It dispenses micro capsules, and, you can still open the micro capsules and there are micro tokens inside!! *beam* For Sanji, the tokens are people/things related to Sanji, like Nami, Robin, his chef knife etc.

I really liked this, so whenever I see a capsule machine that has this toy, I'll try my luck... chopper's cute too! Anyway, so far I only mange to get more Sanji and Zoro..

Satay Zul, Jalan Telok Sisek Kuantan

wait, is it Jalan Telok Sisek? hmm...
i dont know how many of u actually tried the one and only bigger n more famous satay palour in Kuantan, but imo this is definately the best satay around.
some friend suggested another satay place which is a stall somewhere but as i have tasted before, i think the kua (sauce) is not as thick n aromatic as SATAY ZUL's.

u see, actually i dont really crave meat, but at SATAY ZUL, i can easily devour at least 15 - 20 sticks of those deliciosuly grilled (do we say grill?) meat -sticks.
my fav is still the juicy beef satays. mom still prefer the chicken satays as the size of their meat is slightly bigger than any other satay places in town, ha ha. consumers' mentality = the bigger the better, ha ha.
note that in the photos above, the lighter n yellow-er coloured ones are the chicken satay n the darker coloured ones are the beef satay. YUMMY!!!!
never intended to try arnad and rusa though...

McGriddles (b&e), McDonalds' Shinjuku, Japan

I had this last month in Tokyo and I loved it! It was not muffin nor bread, but..... PANCAKES! Yup, pancakes, syrup sandwiching bacon, eggs and cheese. Didn't sound nice, but it tasted great!! When I ate it, it was like.. awww... why they don't have this in Singapore? Then this morning, I saw in the papers, it's here!! Though, I think they only have the sausage and sausage & egg McGriddles here.

Anyway, i think that it is a very fresh idea and good combination. I'll definitely have more of it, i just hope that those here are as good as the ones in Japan :)

Yahoo!'s Shine

Yahoo! has just launched a website called Shine. This is a new website basically for women, where they can get together, search for information and connecting with each other around the world.

Shine has categories such as Fashion & Beauty, Healthy Living, Entertainment, Parenting, Love & Sex, Work & Money, Food, At Home, Astrology, and Speak Up.

The coolest thing about Shine is everyone can contribute. I am not talking about voting on polls, but also commenting on articles, and also writing blogs for any of its categories.

I am no women but I have subscribed to all of its RSS feeds.

Nasi dagang, Kuantan

This is such a simple dish - curry fish with rice (i think it is cooked with coconut milk and something else, but it is definitely NOT Nasi Lemak) wrapped in banana leaves in a triangular shape (always!). Therefore I never understand why we can only get this in Kuantan! Not even other parts of Malaysia, though, I never tried other towns in Pahang. I heard from a friend that we can get it in Kelantan, but the rice is blue in colour, so they are not totally the same.

I had this at Kemaman Kopitiam, Kuantan (coffee at the background). The rice was fragrant, curry was tasty, slightly at the hotter side. However, there was too much curry that it basically soaked, or nearly flooded the rice. Anyway, it was always fun hunting for Nasi Dagang while in Kuantan, as it's not easy to find at the timing we want, so any packet we found was always good enough to satisfy any craving.
